Sony presented a font of virtual reality of Morpheus
Hearings about a font of virtual reality from Sony soared in air for several months. And here, at last, the Japanese corporation presented to the public the vision of the future of this technology. Meet – a font of virtual reality of Morpheus.
This font was developed specially for the game Sony PlayStation 4 console, and head of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shukhey Yosida presented it to public. He told that Sony developed this font within four years, and researches in the field of virtual reality began even earlier.
Yosida showed photos of the first prototypes of a font which used attached to a helmet of virtual reality Playstation Move controlers with being shone spheres for tracking of movements of the head of the player by means of the chamber.
Also Shukhey showed also own photos for which it tested later versions of the device at the end of 2010 and in March of the 2011th. It is visible that the Japanese company seriously treated design of a font, and that constantly changed to the best.
«The industry constantly develops, providing to gamers everything new and new technological improvements. Not always people appear ready to these improvements, and many of them at all do not represent that it in general is possible for realizing. The PlayStation platform expands borders of habitual video games, and we constantly work creating new innovative experience for players. The virtual reality is a following innovation for users of PlayStation which will define the future of video games», – Shukhey Yosida shared with journalists.
Yosida showed to public early practices of Sony in the field of researches of virtual reality. Among other things, on the screen showed a fragment of the game God of War 3 (2010), where the game world was visible from the first person and if to look down down, it was possible to see instead of the body a body of the Spartan Kratosa, the protagonist of a series.
After that to public at last showed the current prototype of a font of Morpheus code-named. The name it, according to Yosida’s statement, has not something in common with the film "Matrix", and is sent to a name of god Morpheus which ruled over the world of dreams. The font is still actively finished, and its design, and also functionality can change over time.
«We believe that Morpheus considerably will improve impressions of the PlayStation 4 console by means of integration with the PlayStation Camera chamber and PlayStation Move controlers. We actively work over improvement of already existing prototype and presented it to public at the GDC-2014 exhibition specially to hear responses from developers of video games and to listen to them».
The being shone spheres fixed on a font was decided to refuse, as very ridiculously it looked from outside. Therefore for tracking of position of the head in space the PlayStation 4 console chamber will be used. Sony directed attention that while the font of Morpheus will support only their game console. Support of personal computers is not planned.
Richard Marx, the head of research division of Sony told to journalists as it together with NASA developed the application allowing the person, to the put-on set, to appear on a surface of Mars and to travel on a red planet. Richard explained that the virtual reality not necessarily should be limited only to video games. For a new font there will be most various appendices, including such thanks to which you can make excursion in the most different corners of our or any other planet.
Marx explained that when developing a font of Sony were focused on six fundamental moments: visual component, sound, tracking of movements, management of games, simplicity of use and development of a content suitable for font. Experience of the Sony company in optics creation (cameras, chambers, cell phones with the built-in chambers etc.) allowed engineers to succeed considerably during development of Morpheus. After all when business reaches virtual reality – the visual component is especially actual.
The five-inch built-in LCD screen permission 1080р in the RGB format will allow to deduce on each eye of the user the picture 960 on 1080 pixels. The review corner in this case will be equal to 90 degrees, and frequency of a conclusion of the image on the display – 1000 hertz. High-precision gyroscope and the accelerometer which in aggregate with the PlayStation Camera chamber will allow quickly and to trace any movements of the head precisely are built in a font. You can turn the head and a body on 360 degrees in any direction – the system will precisely transfer your movements in virtual reality. Moreover, the program component includes «preguessing system» which very precisely foresees, in what party you want to make movement and excludes any sort of a delay in display of this event on the built-in screen.
Games would be faded without a sound therefore Sony presented specially developed system of 3D-sounding which will be supported by Morpheus font. You can connect to a font any wire or wireless earphones with support of a volume sound. The system emulates 60 virtual loudspeakers located round the player and when you will rotate the head – the sound will move also depending on its situation. You can hear steps behind a back or the helicopter flying by over your head that will add a set of new emotions in games.
While the user will play by means of Morpheus, other players can see the image from a helmet on the TV screen, but it will be high-grade, instead of as in a case with Oculus Rift when on the screen two separate pictures for both eyes are deduced. It is not excluded that developers will add support of an asynchronous gameplay when one person can play by means of a font of virtual reality, and the second will play the same time by means of the TV screen, thus cooperating in game with the first player.
The font, judging by statements of engineers of Sony, is completely adjusted under each certain user. It is very convenient, the head and a neck are not tired of its long use, and high frequency of shots and image sharpness do not render any serious load of eyes. This prototype of a font uses a five-meter wire for connection with the game console, but Sony works getting rid of any wires in the future.
Since today, all visitors of the GDC-2014 conference can familiarize with a font personally. For this purpose demos of such games as EVE Valkyrie and Thief, and also the special The Deep and The Castle programs in which the user can fall by an ocean floor and wave with a medieval sword by means of the Move controler were specially developed. Move controlers, by the way, are ideally suited in order that you could feel the real hands in the virtual world.
SDK under a font of Morpheus will be available to creation of projects to developers in the nearest future. Internal studios Sony already work on development of the new software for travel to the virtual worlds, and also sharpening of already existing game projects for their use with a font. Numerous third-party joined own studios Sony the developers which list showed a hall. The price, nor date of an exit of Morpheus for the market, but were not announced yet neither, according to Shukhey Yosida, they will try to make it as soon as possible.
