First impressions of a font of virtual reality of PlayStation VR
One of the main reasons why I so strongly wanted to get on an exhibition «Igromir 2015», was that fact that there for the first time in Russia the font of virtual reality of PlayStation VR will be shown. Attractiveness of a new gadget always stupefies a little, and considering that I cannot simply pass by a new game accessory for the PlayStation 4 console, at all made my visit on the Sony company stand inevitable. So, I carefully investigated a subject of the interest and now is ready to share with you the impressions of a font.
In 2014 of Sony declared that some companies a rank enter race on development of helmets of virtual reality in which at that time there was the unique serious player – Oculus Rift, and also it is less. The project carried the code name Project Morpheus, and the best engineers of the Japanese company, including our compatriot Anton Mikhaylov who developed in due time PlayStation Move controlers which allowed to trace movements of hands of players in space by means of being shone spheres, gyroscopes, accelerometers and a video camera for Sony worked over it. It should be noted that it not the first experience of Sony in the field of helmets of virtual reality. In 1997 it let out Glasstron helmet by means of which it was possible to play MechWarrior 2 as if you are in a cabin of the huge fighting robot. The Japanese company as it appeared, worked about three years over a prototype of a new VR font for the consoles, and here, at last, to it was what to show to public.
I will tell honest: to get on the Sony stand it was difficult even to journalists. In first "business day" of an exhibition only exclusive representatives of the press had access to the stand, to which Sony decided us not to carry. To photograph and test on themselves a gadget those who for long time before carrying out an exhibition was brought in lists of the first lucky had the right only and came to strictly ogovoryonny time. But we after all not a bast boards therefore decided to make up for lost time in the remained days of "Igromir". The next morning we stood about the stand one of the first in live turn as in the remained days for the press from Sony of any indulgences it was not provided. «We have here a democracy», – one of employees of the stand of the company declared. Well, democracy so democracy.
And the turn to an innovative gadget which should go on sale not earlier than spring of 2016, was built the simply huge. We used the admissions and filtered into a hall in some minutes before there let in ordinary visitors. But literally seconds later behind our back the turn from several tens school students with burning eyes was built. The chain of people continued raise with improbable speed. Considering that at the Sony stand there were only three fonts of PlayStation VR, and on demonstration of one demoversion about five minutes left, you can present, as this turn slowly moved ahead. Running a little forward, I will tell you that next day I had to defend heroically in turn two and a half hours to test on myself the second of the presented demoversions. But all these inconveniences definitely cost that.
I will begin the story with physical feelings from a font. These feelings exclusively positive. Any hard belts, as in a case with the first audits of Oculus Rift. Here everything is based on system of sliding handles as in earphones, only this handle fastens not from above, and on your nape. In front the helmet is supplied with a soft pillow which rests against your forehead and evenly distributes loading so that you did not feel discomfort. A font very easy so it is impossible to tell that the head or a neck quickly will be tired of it. Fastening is conveniently moved apart and adjusted to diameter of your head. There is on a font a special button which regulates distance of the virtual screen from your eyes. It is located on the right under font "visor". Having pressed it, you can freely adjust position of the screen on the taste, simply moving the screen forward and back. Personally I as much as possible drew it to the eyes completely to plunge into the invented worlds. By the way, to people who wear glasses, there is nothing to worry. PlayStation VR provides it and it will allow you to appear in virtual reality, without removing points.
Here it is necessary to notice one small detail. When you put on yourselves PlayStation VR, see a small gap between a font and your nose below through which light outside makes the way. First I thought that it was made for this purpose, citizens with especially outstanding shnobely could use it, but then understood that this special engineering decision serving absolutely to other purpose. For what it is necessary? In order that the person did not forget that all this not the present, and only a fruit of the imagination of programmers and artists. That we felt and saw at the PlayStation VR stand, this tiny "crack" connecting you with the real world, becomes a certain saving cable which calms you during especially intense moments of game and does not allow to lose self-control.
The font of PlayStation VR is not supplied with the built-in earphones, as Oculus Rift. Therefore you should put on over it own earphones. For the PlayStation 4 console Gold Wireless Stereo Headset earphones with volume sounding which about 60 virtual sources of a sound are capable to feign are issued. If it would not be desirable to be ruined on firm earphones, will approach any other, compatible to PS4. In general, in respect of additional gadgets of PlayStation VR necessary for work the whole designer represents. Only present: besides a font and the console you need the PlayStation Camera chamber, earphones compatible to the console, and also PlayStation Move controlers and, those, with being shone spheres., Fortunately, all this in a collection is available for me. I bought these accessories still in those days when about virtual reality for PS4 it was known nothing so now infinitely to it it is glad. And what to do to those who only is going to get to itself(himself) PlayStation VR? It is a serious question.
The picture on the internal screen of a font the very qualitative. I judge it on the basis of the small knowledge of area of virtual reality. No, I did not try the final Oculus Rift version which should go on sale, but in comparison with the first audits of a font of Palmer Lucky of PlayStation VR in my opinion wins on quality of the picture. Considering that this picture has permission 960 on 1080 pixels on one eye (the general display resolution 1920 on 1080 pixels), it is possible to imagine that becomes, when in the future there will be similar fonts with permission 4К and above. At present very small number of people possess the computers, capable to give out similar permission so we should be reserved by patience. As to the PlayStation 4 console, namely from it all demos at the stand (I personally looked in the locked bedside tables in which the demonstration equipment settled down) were started, it quite successfully coped with the task put before it and gave out necessary permission with frequency of updating of 120 frames per second.
Technically the font was considerably tightened from the moment of the first demonstration in 2014. Besides the increased permission of the 5,7-inch OLED display and the increased frequency of updating of the image which engineers of Sony achieved thanks to unique technology of an insert of intermediate shots, the corner of the review which makes now 100 degrees was increased. I will tell honest: edges of the picture it is not visible. You see the virtual world, but lateral sight do not notice its edges, and this simply delightful feeling. Between my movements and reaction of virtual reality to them I did not notice any delays. Developers argue that achieved improbably low delay – only 18 milliseconds. Well, at me no, the bases to them not to trust in this question. Picture improbably smooth and realistic. Literally some seconds later you start to forget that it only game, and are dissolved in the virtual world. Probably, it is possible to call it doubtless plus of new technology. The only thing that while personally confuses me are wires which last from the console to PlayStation VR. Developers promise to make it wireless in the future, but hardly they will manage to get rid of a cable to official release in 2016. Though who knows them?
I began the acquaintance to PlayStation VR with a demoversion which was developed by the Japanese studio Capcom familiar to all of you by the series of the games Resident Evil and Street Fighter. The demo was called as The Kitchen and represented a five-minute horror which something reminded me a recent horror film of P.T. from Hideo Kodzima and Guillermo del Toro. Me set on a chair, distances in hands the DualShock 4 gamepad and very strictly forbade something to press on it. First I became puzzled, but then understood that all this is not simple so. You find yourselves connected in the middle of the dark room reminding kitchen of a country house. To the left of you dirty windows, on the right – the huge old refrigerator and regiments with ware. Directly before you there is a support with working video camera, and on a floor in a corner the body of the unknown man lies. Having looked down down, I found the connected wrists. Now to me it became clear, why it is necessary to hold the gamepad: so you have palms most closely to each other that corresponds to their situation in game. The role was played also by that fact that my character in game was dressed in the same jeans, as well as I. I saw the feet through a crack in the bottom of a font and right there saw their continuation in virtual reality. Believe me, it repeatedly adds realism to the events. At first I pushed and dropped the hands a support with the chamber, and from a roar the mysterious man who all this time was unconscious regained consciousness. It jumped, seized any knife and asked me to raise hands that it was more convenient to it to cut mine путы. I raised the gamepad, and it started to cut ropes an edge, thus convulsively muttering itself under a nose that it is necessary to leave immediately from here. Behind his back from anywhere there was a woman with long elf-lock and the person distorted by an infernal grimace. It rushed on it and deafened. Then lifted a knife and came nearer to me. The edge rocks at me before a nose, and I can consider distinctly hanging-down locks of its dirty hair and mad eyes. It would be desirable to be removed from it back, but there is no place – the chair back on which I sit disturbs. Suddenly the woman sticks a knife to me into the left foot. You can not believe me, but this second I felt phantom pain as if the edge entered not into the virtual hero, and in my own flesh. This feeling is difficult for describing words therefore simply take me a word – effect of presence improbable. That occurs in a demoversion further – I will not begin to tell, that you could familiarize with this demo when PlayStation VR will go on sale. For certain Sony will publish it in a free access. However I will tell that The Kitchen is an improbable experience for judges of horrors and hunters of new impressions. Unfortunately, I cannot show you any shot from this demo, as it is specially started without the demonstration TV to keep in secret a plot. It was interesting to watch from outside other people who tried The Kitchen after me. They shuddered, shouted and tried to jump up from a chair, but employees of the stand calmed them. The demo really very terrible, with it to argue silly.
The second demoversion which I tested on myself, is a work of the British studio London Studio. It is called as The London Heist and narrates about everyday life of representatives of the criminal world. An exhibition format «Igromir 2015» did not allow to show us the full version of a demo therefore it was started in a cut form. The part was cut completely out from it with a pursuit and firefight on cars. But even that organizers left to us, makes indelible impression and is remembered for a long time. Everything begins with that you, as well as in a case with The Kitchen, sit connected on a chair in a certain basement. Before you there is a bald grinning bandit with a gas torch in hands, which, probably, is going to torture you to find out certain valuable information. Previously to you in each hand give on the PlayStation Move controler that you could see the extremities in virtual space. First me confused that I could not find the hands anywhere nearby though brought controlers to eyes, and then it became clear that it was just necessary to wait a little and game will allow you to manipulate them freely. While the bandit already brought the torch to my eyes, раздаётся phone call. His boss asks to transfer a tube to me, and it, as though scoffing, holds phone over my head. During this moment you need to be given a hand, taken the smartphone and to bring it to an ear. Curiously, what exactly in this ear you will hear a voice of the telephone interlocutor as I already spoke above – the volume sound in a case with virtual reality is very important. After that we are transferred to the past where you should plunder a certain rich estate. You examine someone’s office, open desk lockers, find the gun and some holders for it, find a key and open the safe with jewelry, but the same second the alarm system works, and to you security guards will run together. Firefight looks simply smartly. You can hide, turn aside, bend down, being in parallel shot from enemies and recharging the gun. The weapon is recharged, as in real life – you suffice a holder from a table and insert it into the gun. The first some seconds are unusually to shoot, but very quickly you will accustom and will start to get to enemies directly to their grinning heads. Enemies cinematically fall and break the bodies furniture, break from balconies, hide from you behind various shelters. Everything comes to an end too quickly, and you would like an additive but when from you remove a font, you see couple of hundreds people which many hours stand in a queue and too thirst to touch new technology. By the way, if in The Kitchen the picture resolution seemed to me a little granular, in The London Heist granularity was not evident any more that pushes on thought on use of different permissions in different games.
The third demoversion is a branch of space strategy of EVE Online under the name EVE Valkyrie in a genre of space simulators. We already saw it earlier in the version for Oculus Rift therefore to defend turn in the third time did not decide. And looking at length of this turn, it became clear that we will manage to grow old and die much earlier, than it will end. Nevertheless we interrogated eyewitnesses who managed to test a demo on itself. It very much was pleasant to them, however, apparently, among the people who have left the PlayStation VR stand, it was impossible to meet dissatisfied faces. Both representatives of the press, and ordinary visitors of an exhibition agreed in opinion that it is full delight and the most expected gaming accessory of the beginning of 2016.
However, did not do without small technical slips and the unpleasant moments which I am not going to suppress. For example, few times during The London Heist demo position of my hands in virtual space as though moved down aside a little, but then they came back to the place. Still few times at me consoles with demoversions hanged, and they should be restarted. All this can be written off on that still enough crude and developers have a software some months on optimizing and debugging it. Also personally I was revolted strongly by that fact that one of volunteers (yes, Anton, it we about you) which PR managers of Sony employed for work at the stand, constantly pulled faces to visitors in a font, using that those do not see it. It went round them and frankly at them scoffed, amusing crowd. Ridiculous personally I in it did not see anything. On me it was inappropriate and it is very ugly from its party. But who I am such to judge? However, other employees of the stand were quite benevolent and pleasant in communication.
PlayStation VR, undoubtedly, is very attractive acquisition for all fans of video games. Certainly, before us there is an obvious question: whether and many games will support it on the PlayStation 4 console? Today for a font such games, as Adrift are declared, to Ark: Survival Evolved, EVE Valkyrie, Project CARS, Surgeon Simulator, War Thunder and ten of others. Here it is necessary to consider that I listed some multiplatform projects, without those games which are prepared for release by Sony. And she after all even created separate studio for development of exclusive VR games. Even if on start of sales of available games will be a little, I am ready to wait, how many it is necessary to indulge also all this time myself technical demoversions which today for PlayStation VR more than two tens were created already. Remember at least Summer Lesson demo in which it will be possible to communicate with charming Japanese girls – unless not a charm? The next year promises to be roast, after all in sale three fonts of virtual reality from large producers of HTC/Valve, Oculus VR and Sony will arrive at once. It was necessary to wait only their release and to compare the prices as today we do not know cost of any of these three gadgets.
